Anarkali is a 2015 Indian Malayalam-language romance film written and directed by Sachy and produced by Rajeev Nair. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Priyal Gor, Biju Menon, Miya, Sudev Nair, Kabir Bedi and Samskruthy Shenoy.[1][2] Principal photography began in February 2015 and was shot mostly in Kavaratti, Bangaram and Agatti in Lakshadweep. Anarkali was released on 13 November 2015. It received generally positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success.[3]

Plot[edit]
Shanthanu Varma, who was a navy officer, pines over a girl whom he loved 15 years ago and had to leave the navy because of his affair with her. Since the girl (Nadira) whom he loved was underage (15 years), which he was not aware of, both of them agree to wait to show their love is true, to the Nawabi father (Jaffefr), who is also Shanthanu's Commanding Officer and Flag Officer. Shanthanu lost touch with Nadira for two years. His search for her lead him to Kavaratti, Lakshadweep. The rest of the story forms from lives around Kavaratti and depressed Shanthanu's attempts to reach to Nadira.

Production[edit]
Priyal Gor and Miya were signed for the lead female roles. While the former would play the main lead as Nadira Imam, teenage daughter of a Rear Admiral in the Indian Navy, the latter's role is that of a supporting character, Dr. Sherin Mathew, who works in Kavarathi.[4] Story of the film is based on two Naval officers, Prithviraj and Biju Menon in the Indian Navy. Bollywood actor Kabir Bedi was cast as Nadira's father, Jaffer Imam, who is a commanding officer of base hailing from Lucknow and Sachi said that both Kabir and Priyal would speak mostly in Hindi and English in the film.[4] Director Shyamaprasad was selected for a pivotal role and his character Commodore Madhavan Nair was said to be crucial to the film.[4]Samskruthy Shenoy was later chosen to portray Duvha, a 'Pucca Muslim woman' from Lakshwadweep, who is a medical student who left her studies shy of 1 year, due to a love affair and works as a physician assistant.[5] Other supporting roles were given to directors Major Ravi, Renji Panicker and Madhupal. Sujith Vassudevv and Vidyasagar were signed as the cinematographer and music director, respectively.

The film collected ₹1.11 crore (US$160,000) on its release day,[7]₹2.71 crore (US$390,000) in 3 days,[8] and ₹ 4.5 crore within 5 days.[7] It grossed ₹6.42 crore (US$930,000) in 10 days and ₹7.74 crore (US$1.1 million) in 14 days of release and complete 100 days in Kerala.[8]

Anarkali is a 1966 Malayalamromance film based on the historical love story between Prince Salim and Anarkali. Directed and produced by Kunchacko, the film was a direct adaptation of the 1953 Hindifilm of the same name.[1] The film stars Prem Nazir and K. R. Plot[edit]
Prince Salim falls in love with Anarkali, a courtesan in his father Akbar's kingdom. Akbar forbids Salim to prolong this affair as he wants his son to marry a Rajput princess and thereby strengthen communal harmony. But Salim becomes blind in his love for Anarkali, leading to a struggle between father and his adamant son. All of Akbar and Minister Man Singh's attempts to separate the lovers fail.
Salim and Akbar have a serious argument, which goes to the extent of Salim leading a campaign against his father. Salim is defeated in the ensuing war and is sentenced to death. Empress Jodhabai begs Akbar to spare the life of their son, but he does not accede to her request. Anarkali is sentenced to be buried alive. Salim escapes from the jail and rushes to save Anarkali from the punishment. But before he reaches the burial ground, Anarkali's punishment is carried out.

The film's cast includes playback singer K. J. Yesudas and music director L. P. R. Varma playing small roles. Yesudas played Tansen, who was a pioneer in Indian music and one of Akbar's Navaratnas. In a scene, Yesudas lip-syncs a song which was sung by P. B. Sreenivas.[1]
Historical inaccuracies[edit]
- The film was completely shot from Kunchacko's Udaya Studio and failed in setting the Moghul era on screen.[1]
- Akbar's wife Mariam-uz-Zamani is called Jodhabai in the film. Though she has been also referred to by this name in modern times, she was never known as such during her lifetime.[2]
